Import regulations for certain breeds of dogs:
France distinguishes between two categories of regulations regarding the entry of "dangerous" breeds of dogs.

  • 1st category dogs:
France prohibits the entry and transit of so-called fighting dogs of the breeds Pitbull (Staffordshire Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier), Boerbull (Mastiff) and Tosa, which are not registered in any pedigree book approved by the International Canine Federation. Important: Likewise, dogs that bear a resemblance to these breeds are included in this category.Hunde der 2. Kategorie:
  • Entry and transit of dogs of the 1st category are permitted if the dog is registered in a pedigree book approved by the International Canine Federation. Rottweilers and dogs that are comparable in their morphological characteristics according to the pedigree dog Rottweiler also belong to the 2nd category, but do not require a pedigree book. The movement of dogs in the second category is subject to numerous conditions that make a short stay in France virtually impossible, as dog and owner must complete the various proofs of suitability, behavioural assessment, possession permit (this is linked to a residence in France) in France. If you want to stay in France regularly and for a longer period of time, it is recommended to check with the local town hall.
  • By the way: Dogs of the breeds (and not type) Doberman, Great Dane and Staffordshire Bull Terrier do not belong to the first or second category. Their import is permitted. However, it is recommended that a muzzle be worn and that the dogs be kept on a leash by a person of full age.
  • Our tip: Be really careful when importing dogs that resemble these categories. If in doubt, be sure to have a certificate (detailed and comprehensible to the French authorities) from a veterinarian confirming that the dog does not belong to one of these categories. Without this certificate or in the case of an untrue certificate, you can expect criminal sanctions - this can even lead to the confiscation of the dog. If you or your vet are not sure whether the dog could be classified as a prohibited dog type, we advise you not to take it to France.
  • Please note: All entry requirements are researched by us as conscientiously as possible. Unfortunately, however, regulations can change without us knowing. For this reason, please always check the official information (online) from the responsible embassy before you travel - especially when it comes to the entry of certain breeds of dog - to be absolutely sure that everything will go off without a hitch.
